9.23.12 – Ketchup, Ketchup, Mustard!
I played a big game of catch-up this weekend, I checked off a lot of miscellaneous items that have been floating on my to-do list, that felt pretty nice. Starting with finishing the furring strips for the siding, then putting in the blocking and getting a jump on the siding. I am going to try to get all the trim-boards cut throughout the week so hopefully I can trim the whole house next weekend. I hope you all have had a stellar weekend and are ready for a great week!
Good-luck on your last test in the morning James.
Here are some pictures:

Finally, I got the furring all up! I started this a long time ago, when I first wrapped the building, mostly to secure the building wrap. I finally finished it though! I was up on the ladder all day Saturday and I didn't even fall off! I WAS working again solo but I had called James and told him I was going to touch base with him at least every half hour and if he didn't hear from me for longer than that then to come get me because I probably fell off the ladder again... but I didn't!

From the other side! The furring is at 16 inches on center with the studs. Most of the pieces of recycled pallet wood are 32 inches long, this should work out well. The whole siding process will be labor intensive though, measure and cut one piece at a time.

A day-time shot of the electric panel

A daytime shot of the main plug! yeah power!

Here is the secondary panel for the floor. The deal on the right is the weatherproof box that will protect the main power plugs.

I went through the house and put up all of the blocking needed for the drywall (the corners). I have a couple more pieces of blocking to put up for the kitchen shelving and then I am literally ready to drywall (even though I am going to focus more on the outside while I have a little bit of weather left.

The front edge of the house needed a couple pieces of blocking for the ceiling drywall. I also filled the gaps in the ceiling with spray foam insulation.

After the spray-foam and blocking.

I was able to get up on the ladder and cut the corners so they lay flat and I can trip out the edges. I plan on cutting up all the trim-boards this week so hopefully I can barrow some people and get it all trimmed out next weekend. I think the trim boards will add A LOT to the looks. They probably won't be painted but, maybe... we will see how much I can get done...

The front edge, corners are all tucked up too!

I got a good jump on planing the siding this weekend too. I am LOVING how it is turning out so far. There are so many different types of wood, the different grains and colors look fantastic. I think staining it is going to pop all of those differences, I am so excited to start hanging it all up! I still have a ton of pallets I haven't disassembled but I am going to get what I have ready and see how far it gets me. So far I have WAY over-estimated all of my materials (you would think I would be a little better at that since it's part of my real job...but I'm not), my hope is that I overestimated this too and have plenty right now 🙂

This is still what's left of the pallet I started with... still a ways to go! I am sorting through as I go, trying not to shove any nails through my brand new baby (my planer 🙂 )

This is the second pallet, it has way more wood on it than the first pallet even had. I will have enough work to keep me busy a while... I have nearly already gone through a set of blades (I am doing my best not to hit nails... ) so I ordered a couple more sets yesterday, it ought to be enough to get me through for a while...

It's kinda hard to see but I took a couple pictures of the wood grains that are popping out, here is the first one, just a traditional pine from our region.

I think this one may be poplar?? It's a lot harder than the pine and has grey-ish tones in it, there are some of these with really cool textures...

I think this is just pine too but some of them have cool knot patterns

This is cedar, its a lot more red than the picture looks... smells so nice when it gets planed! I have planed a couple oak boards, I guess I didn't picture them though, they look awesome, they are considerably more heavy so I will use them sparingly but I like 'em!

I LOVE my new baby, I am making more plans for her 🙂

I tried but with this pallet wood there are hidden nails, I hit one here... I have a side pile going of all of the boards with nails that need to be removed...

I made quite the pile of sawdust again today...

We got a bit of a rainstorm today, hopefully it will wash away some of the smoke that has been lingering around the valley from all the fires around the state. I haven't even been able to see the foothills for a few days, its crazy bad air quality. It helped wash away some of the dirt that has been collecting on the roof.

Here is my awkward family photo for the night. Nater hosted his first family dinner party at his new house, we had a great time and great food! Nate's place is so comfy!

Just wanted to end on a good note, I like how the furring looks, I can't wait to start in on the siding!

I think I am going to switch the porch material too, I was planning on reusing the decking from the trailer but it isn't coming out of the planer too well... I think I may just stick with 2x4's...
