I believe that the plank flooring will not provide a perfectly flat substrate necessary for optimal adhesion and evenly flat appearance of the installed tiles. Also, the separate planks will change dimensionally in individual ways that may cause some the set tiles to loosen. For appearance sake and longevity I would not take this shortcut.
Clyde, great comment, what if it were two layers of 3/4″ plywood, fastened and glued together with alternating seams? Do you think that would be uniform enough?
