Update 1.6.12
I have stairs! Slowly but surely chugging along. I have more work to do to get done with this weekends stuff but here is an update:

Nate is the best! He welded this up on Saturday, he did an amazing job!

and it slipped in like a glove! I love my stairs!

I have just enough room for my trimwork around the door, These are pretty tight stairs but also pretty comfortable. I think, if I had it to do again I may have moved them into the space a little more and not right against the wall, I did so in order to save space and so they were at the talest point in the ceciling, less headbanging that way. I think it would have been ok though if it were centered...

I took the nails out of the scrapped hardwood flooring and ripped down each piece to length, it went pretty quick really. Here are all the little tounge and groove scraps.

After ripping them all down I moved to the planing stage. I had a nice little set up and it went pretty quick! It was nice to be in the shop, it's been in the teens around here lately!

Yet to be sent through

After the first pass through some of these started to peel up like the other boards had previously done too. Turns out I was probably trying to take too much off at once. lessened the cut depth and it worked like a dream!

And it's like brand new flooring! I am going to stain these a darkish color 🙂

Setting them all in place. Turns out I did about half as much as I will need to do but about as much as I could handle this particular day :).

Measuring out the steps. I tried to pick the pieces that would leave the least amount of scrap

Then I cut them all to fit in place. I like it!

Pretty sweet, right!? 🙂

and another, just for good measure I guess...

And now some hangin out time with the pooch...

This is what I wish I was doing! The fire is pretty hypnotizing...

And some shots from other fun weekend adventures, Hockey!

My brother's neighbor wasn't able to make it to the game so he gave Nate the tickets, turns out they were suite tickets and well catered and lots of beer! Fun stuff. My second game of the weekend, I was able to make it Friday also with Carissa. I can't decide which seats were better, suite or right on the ice, in the corner with the most fights! 🙂 Fun stuff, I love hockey!
Those stairs look ready for drawers. Any plans to put some sort of storage in there.
Also, reading this post, I couldn’t help but remember the scene from “The Money Pit” when they finish the stairs and it makes Tom Hanks cry.
They are going to be storage cubbies for blankets and things, I have some baskets that will slip in there and tuck everything away nice, my hope is that way it will still ‘feel’ a little more open than drawers. If it just ends up looking cluttered drawers are the plan. I feel a bit like that I imagine! Not so much money pit but the time pit! ALL of my spare time goes to this thing! I love that my brother snuck this in though and welded up the stairs while I was doing other things! 🙂 Thanks for the comment! 🙂
hi macy
the stairs are great…..
are you sure you want to stain the wood a dark color?
i love the light walls that you have and light wood would be gorgeous…..just a suggestion : )

I have no idea what my ‘deal’ is, I have always had something against lighter wood, it always seems to yellow or something and I end up hating it. It won’t be an extremely dark color but maybe like a medium walnut sort of color. I still want it to look like wood and not compete too much with my [dark] tile… so mid-tone. 🙂 Thanks for the double-check, I can’t tell you how many times I have reconsidered and recalculated because of comments from people! It’s SUPER helpful!
I love the welded metal and wood slat stairs Macy! awesome.
Thanks Carrie!
i’m another big fan of bright white walls and really dark stained wood! My favorite combination!
Everything looks beautiful! it’s coming together so quickly now – must be exciting!
