Update 5.2.13
May 2, 2013 § 1 Comment
I had a great work night tonight! I fixed every one of my lingering electrical issues. It turns out I don’t care for electrical work much, its so simple but so complicated too, drives me crazy! I was close to beating my head against the wall trying to fix my bathroom outlet, just as I was going to give up I looked out the window and our family friend Steve was pulling in the driveway. It could not have been better timing! He set me straight and fixed the outlet in no time. I was inspired to run through all the other parts and fix them too!
I also got a bit more of the shower cleaned, it still needs a lot of scrubbing… note for future, rinse off the grout when its wet… I didn’t do this because I had a floor full of wet grout and didn’t want to drip water all over it. As it is I have a bunch of scrubbing to do
.
We also had another P&Z meeting, I am getting more comfortable with that, it was a really easy one tonight. It took maybe 6 minutes total
. A lot of my effort is in understanding the process of making motions etc. It’s a learning curve, I feel like maybe I am starting to understand better though.
- I now have 4 working pendant lights
- Slick!
- And a fan, that works and doesn’t wobble at all!
- And BAM! Bathroom has light too!
- And I even installed the can light in the shower too
- And it ALSO works!
- The dreaded switch I was dreading replacing is replaced!
- They are all covered and working!

It was sorta a lazy night, well as much as I ever have those… mostly because I am SORE! I’m not sure what exactly I did to strain every muscle in my legs but I feel like I was doing squats for 5 hours yesterday! I took the opportunity to get a decent jump on my trellis, there is lots more to do but it only took about an hour to get this far so it should be done soon
.
So, to not feel so bad about not doing a ton of work I took the opportunity to think through my process on how to wrap this project up!
Announcement! I was accepted to be a keynote speaker at Boise’s first ever Mini Makers Faire which is pretty darn exciting! (I will probably be asking for advice on getting together some sort of presentation on this in the near future) It takes place over Memorial Day weekend so I have decided that would be a good goal to be complete by (May 25th and 26th). In order to make that happen though I need a game plan, the following is a list of the items left to finish and my estimation of time if applicable:
Trellis (3 hours)
Tile Floor
- Install heat tape (4 hours)
- Apply mortar bed (2 hours plus sitting overnight)
- Install tile (8 hours)
Tile Shower
- Apply RedGaurd (1 hour plus sitting overnight)
- Install tile (8 hours)
Millwork
- Cut cabinet doors (2 hours)
- Paint cabinets (6 hours)
- Build drawers (10 hours)
- Install pulls (2 hours)
- Bookshelf (3 hours)
Siding
- De-nail boards (20 hours)
- Rip boards to size (4 hours)
- Plane boards (4 hours)
- Install Siding (16 hours)
Connect Plumbing
- Shower
- Lav
- Kitchen
Fix the Electrical I messed up (4 hours)
Install Toilet (3 hours)
Replace Tires (trip to the store)
Front Electrical Closet Doors (3 hours)
I have approximately 6 weeks to complete it in the timeframe, 2 and a half of those weekends I will be out of town or unavailable so this will be a tight squeeze and mostly weeknights after work! It has been getting much easier to work on it now that things are getting all prettied up! Each checkmark affects the aesthetics, it’s pretty neat for me.
Last night I was able to just sit and relax in the bed area, it equalled a pretty zen moment and an incredible feeling of pride! That’s it for now!

Update 3.25.13

Just a quick update, I fixed a couple electrical problems that I caused earlier, I still have a couple more to fix. I worked to get the cabinets in place, almost there!
Here are some images:
- Who has a new porch light… this girl! :) It doesn’t seem very ‘bright’ but it sure does at night, it’s pretty awesome, all down-light.
- Making some cuts in the kitchen cabinet to allow the plumbing through
- I have a bit of a problem with the metal frame sticking out it was easier to make some modifications to the wood than it was to the metal, so cut away!
- I measured these a bit too tight… literally an 1/8th of an inch and this would be a WHOLE lot easier.
- I may take a sander to the sides and see how much easier I can make this…
- This is that piece of metal that sticks through the wood now.
- And here is the new porch light in action!
- All the modifications to cut the plumbing in in the sink cabinet
- My version of a self portrait. The opening is where the sink will go.
- The first cabinet, will be drawers.
- The second, largest one will be the sink with a propane tank under it and hopefully an instant water heater
- Then an opening for a washer/dryer unit
- then the stove with a large drawer underneath it
- The final cabinet is just two large shelves
- And the overall.
- I don’t even know what I was trying to capture here….
- And this is why you once again don’t work in flip-flops… my poor feet go through hell in this project, stepping on nails, breaking my heel… scraping a cabinet across my toe… turns out toes bleed a lot, I had to wrap it up so it didn’t stain my deck.!
Update 1.1.13
January 1, 2013 § 3 Comments
It’s a new year! I can’t wait to get done with my house!!! I am so ready to be in it… alas… I have lots more work to do, BUT! I got tons tone this weekend! The next push will be to plane down some of the reclaimed hardwood floors in preparation for the loft. I will also be helping Nate as I can to get the dresser and kitchen stuff welded together. Right now I have all of the pieces cut up and ready to weld together. More images of that coming soon! It’s awesome, I promise! I hope you all have the best year of your life!
I have a small request, if there are people who read my blog who are building a tiny house of their own and documenting the process (or know of others not already on my tinyhousers list), either flickr, a blog, facebook or any other way please leave a comment below, preferably with a link, I would love to add you to my tiny housers list.
Here are some pictures from the weekend:
- Starting in on the shower floor :)
- Each stone was lovingly laid in by hand!
- Getting there!
- and I have a stone floor in my shower. I still have to grout it but I like how it turned out, it will go well with my tile!
- After I laid all the stones I took a rolling pin to it and pushed them to a similar level. I pushed some further than I had planned and I’m not sure it was a smart idea but time will tell! once it is all set I will clean it up and see how it feels on my feetsies!
- And a bulb… It’s attached just so I can tell if I hooked the outlets ad switches up right… it was a fun moment… scary but fun!
- And I got to the windoows, all the gaps in the trim got a paintable caulk applied. Here is the before.
- And after. I also put wood putty in all the nail holes. I will be putting one more layer of paint on the trim
- And all the outlets adn switches got filled with some great stuff insulation. Since I used rigid insulation there was a bit of a gap behind each recepticle and you could literally feel a breeze coming in when it was windy. I just poked the nozzel through the back holes and filled the gaps, it feels tighter already.
- And a few more dimensions I wanted to document. I am getting ready to make the kitchen counter and I want to center the sink on the window, here is the width of the window.
- this is the distance between the window and the wall (this number plus half of the window width is the centerline of the sink). Noted.
- This is the depth of the sink, I was planning on undermounting it but I am thinking it would look cleaner to top mount it, thoughts?
- the full depth.
- and here is the width.
- and my stove, height.
- stove width.
- stove depth. these come in handy for welding my counter.
- I just love it :)
- My new bathroom light fixture, I finally found one I liked that fit in enough with my design. It was a little more than I expected to spend but it’s good! (50 bucks)
- And hooking up the rest of the pendant lights in the kitchen, easy cheezy now!
- Making some shades for them.
- Just got some help from dad and drilled a hole in a mason jar top with a hole saw, bing bing bing!
- and, when i shoved the guts back up in there I disconnected the last light on accident (I did the same thig to the GFCI in the bathroom, Ill get them fixed!) For now I have a dead soldier in the back there but for the most part my power is there!
- Love it! It turns out the light in the bathroom fixture is unique so i have to go get one of those, and insert the shower can light and then I am 100% set on power. I even have some of the covers on.
Update 12.30.12

5/8″ flatbar:
- Art Project. This is just a sneak peak I suppose, its kinda lengthy to explain but in short I m doing an art project to separate the living area from the bedroom area. More to come soon!
- My shower floor!
- I was looking previously at buying some floor tile sheets of black stones, I went a little cheaper…
- I actually drove around to 5 different Walmarts today, that is saying A LOT for me, I hate that store. It was the only place after going 4 others that carried these stones. The square foot sheets are around 12 dollars, if I buy them in craft packs it works out to about 4 dollars a square foot… much more afordable but still more spensive than just finding some at a river :)
- I got 10 packages which was just short of enough, I had to run to more stores to get enough for the whole 9 square feet. If it was more area I am sure I would have gone a different route, as it is this should work out pretty well.
- I filled up he shower with the thinset, I am going to let it set through the night and add the stones tomorrow. I set one in and it slowly just sunk, so setting is necessary :)
- In other news, I picked up the metal for my dresser/stairs and kitchen counter. Nate was kind enough to help me out here, I don’t know the metal lingo
- I got some 3/4″ angle, 3/4″ flat bar and 3/4″ tube steel.
- There is some extra up there for a little project dad is working on too!
- Here is the scchematic for the kitchen counter for the welding
- And here is the schematic for the steps/dresser, this is what we started on this weekend!
- I took some measurements
- Measure twice cut once
- this is the total clear width of the inside of my trailer, just fyi.
- window sill height
- Loft height
- After cutting up everything Nathan tacked some in place and we put it in the house to check the dimensions before going gangbusters on the welding, we wanted to make sure it would fit, it was like a glove!
- This is how deep the biggest step is, there will be cubbies in each of the steps
- overall
- This is some of the hard birch wood floor after I took the stain off. It was stained a yllowish color but I am going to stain it more of a brown/reddish color.
- Here is how the metal meets up with the loft
- Here is about how it will go together with the wood. The loft will all be this hardwood floor. I am really happy with how this piece is turning out already!
- Here are some process pictures
- Nates set up. Nate has lots of projects going on too! Check out his jeep he is rebuilding, it’s pretty awesome!
- The metal cutter, this is pretty slick!
- After cutting up all the pieces
- Here are the first pieces I cut, the bottom frame.
- Nater welding it up!
- And grinding the front face
- More grinding
- Here is waht it looks like all grinded!
- The steps, these would make greaat picture frames, and with the costs I was really shocked at how inexpensive these would be as frames…. and they are so cool looking
- and a calf. I want. Does anyone know how much it costs on average to bottle feed a calf? I have heard they need it for about 90 days after being boorn and then can transition to calf food, does that sound about right?
