Family Update 6.9.15

I haven’t done a family update in a while, I feel like this second baby is already not getting the same attention that Hazel has :).   I had my appointment though and he is looking and sounding good!  He is definitely getting more active and has the same schedule that Hazel did while pregnant.  He gets up around 11am, bounces around an hour or so then comes back for a party around 9pm for a few hours.  He isn’t playing back with the bumps yet like Hazel did but I can feel he’s getting stronger.  I am at 23 weeks and measuring big, I was very happy to find out, even though I feel much bigger this time around I am measuring exactly the same as with Hazel at this point.  Apparently my kiddos get their growth spur early!  We are kicking around a lot of names, Miles seems to have stayed at the top for a while now, we shall see as it gets closer.  I think boy names are harder, I think I said the same thing about girl names while pregnant with Hazel.  It’s a lot of pressure, I want something that could be funky but also would be professional if that is the path they took… It would be so much nicer if they just came out with name tags.  All in all this pregnancy is MUCHO easier than Hazel’s, I am not nauseous, I’m not HOT (I’m sure that will happen more later), I’m not stressed and I am not having a hard time putting on weight like I was with Hazel bean.

Today at the park a little girl (3 1/2) asked why I was ‘fat like that (pointing to my belly)’.  I said I was going to have a baby.  She asked why I was having another baby since I already had one…  This girl was at the park with her older brother and younger sister.  I said it was because I wanted one!  She informed me that her mom only wanted ONE baby so she only had one!  (her little sister) Her mom was totally mortified and I was just busting up, I am happy to not be the one who didn’t have a clue what to do (I’m sure my time will come with Ms. Hazel!)!  This girl clearly never thought of her or her brother as babies, they were big kids!   It was hilarious.

Miss Hazel is amazing, she’s a smarty pants.  She is starting to get really frustrated that she can’t talk, you can tell she really wants to sometimes.  She knows just what we are saying and as I get bigger I have found that I can use her as a task doer (go get my shoes, go get YOUR shoes, etc.).  She says ‘hot’, ‘hat’ (but won’t wear them!), ‘oops’, ‘uh-oh’, ‘shoe’, ‘mama’, ‘dada’, mostly she LOVES making animal noises.  We got a season pass to the zoo and try to make it down there once a week or so to check out the animals.  If you ask her what her favorite animal is she says ‘oh oh, ah ah’ [monkey] BUT if we are at the zoo and I ask she walks right to the goats!   She loves dinosaurs, she roars loud for them :).   I can’t believe how much she learns and how fast!  Every day it seems she has a new trick… today she mastered brushing her own teeth.

On Monday I was texturing her walls in the addition during her morning nap, she woke up just before I got done so I got her up then finished up with her watching.  Later that afternoon when I was doing the dishes she snuck into her room, grabbed a broom, uncovered the mud and started going to town texturing her own walls, so we worked on that a little together just in time for her dad to get home and take a little video of it :).

I think she’s pretty brilliant :).  She’s been getting to hang out with her grandparents most weekends while James and I work on the addition, she’s really been liking that!

James and I have stayed amazingly on schedule with the renovation, even with setbacks to it.  Originally I slated eight weekends for the whole renovation, we have completed 7.  One of those weekends we got no work done because it was our video shoot with SketchUp BUT, even with that we are on schedule.  Now, through the process, we decided to combine the re-floor project so I have added a weekend to the timeline to do all that which is pretty good if we can do all of that stuff in 9 weekends.  I will admit, these next two weekends will be tough work but hopefully we can stay on track, IF it creeps a little that is ok.  This weekend we will be ripping out all of the radiant floor and tile in prep for that part.  Through the week while Hazel naps and James is at work I will also remove all the wood parts like the counter tops, the bathroom door, the loft floor etc. as those are all being swapped out with the same bamboo that will be replacing the tile.  The tile is being replaced because it is not working the way I had expected/hoped and I don’t like my babies crawling around on an ice cold floor, nor do I like paying constantly to keep it heated.  The bamboo will work out so much better I think.  Since it is getting replaced though the wood tones will not look good (in my opinion) next to the new material so I decided to take on a little more and replace those at the same time with the same material.  This is a lot lighter than the current color scheme and should make the house look considerably different, I am excited to see if it turns out.

Alongside the wood demo I will be painting all of the steel trim that I have because over time it has taken on a new color and just sort of looks dirty all the time.  It looked great when it was fresh and new but now, not so much.  I will be painting it all white so it looks clean and disappears.  That makes me have quite a bit to get done through the week but I am hopeful, with Hazel’s help, we can do it!

We do have a small camera crew coming from Japan for the re-floor weekend, they are working on a documentary and have asked to film some of it.  I am happy to oblige but it may push things back a little, we shall see.  Our goal is still to get everything done by the end of June.  We have a trip planned to visit James’s family for the 4th of July, hoping to be able to come back to a fresh, clean and new house and then slow the projects down a bit :).

Denver dog is still amazing, we have been having record high temps so he is perfectly content sneaking up to the couch by the A/C whenever he thinks he can get away with it.  He had a great time with the film crew last weekend and was happy to get to be included in the fun :).  I feel bad for neglecting him so much lately, the weekends are usually our major dog park outings but with the reno his visits have taken a back seat.   We go for drives as much as possible and he will make it until our next adventure :).

I think that about covers things for now, I hope everyone is having a great spring/summer!

  1. Cool update. House additions sound interesting. As for boys name, you can’t miss with “Ruger” (pronounced Roo-ger)….

  2. Fantastic news! Thank you for update; you have inspired us to build and build some more very soon!

  3. Great update, thank you! What a doll Hazel is, and Denver is so mellow, better hold your breath for this next kid! Just kidding, 2nd babies are usually pretty adaptable. Good to know you are doing well.

    1. That is exactly what we are thinking! Hazel was a hellish pregnancy but a total angle, this kid is a wonderful pregnancy, we are expecting a terror! 🙂 Thank you!! 🙂

  4. i’m curious to know what you do with the materials you take out. i realize you re-use what you can. are you able to transition the remainder to habitat for humanity or their resale store or do you put it on ebay or try to sell it otherwise to help reduce your cost/clutter ratio?

    1. OH! That is a great point I totally glazed over… So far the materials removed are my siding, which is crap wood since its reclaimed pallets, I don’t even feel comfortable using it for camp wood since I have no idea what chemicals are on it so unfortunately it just got temporarily diverted from the trash, where it resides now… the decking, which is reused for Hazels play area on the patio. This weekend the tile will be removed, I am doubting it will be able to be salvaged but if it pops up that easily it may be able to go to H for H for reuse. it is a pretty clean product that wraps itself back into the ecosystem pretty seamlessly, everything else has been or will be reused in the build 🙂
