Burn-Out…

Macy M20 comments7894 views

Man, lately I have been dragging tail with this tiny house.  I have been being pulled in several other directions which has been good but I  feel like the house is a burden hanging over me more than something I am excited to get back to… I know in theory that if it isn’t fun I shouldn’t be doing it but, for the sake of transparency in this process, I am burnt out!  It’s such weird timing because I am, right now at the point where literally EVERYTHING else is the ‘fun stuff’ that I was SO looking forward to… From this point on it’s getting into the finish work, the pretty stuff, everything added will create BIG changes, I should be more excited for that dang it!

Well, I hope it goes away soon otherwise I will just have to work through it! 🙂

  1. I know what you are going through. I too have experienced burnout on our house. I mean, we go and go and go and it seems like we are so close until we realize we aren’t. I definitely think it isn’t always gonna be fun though. If it were everyone would build one. It is fun mixed with challenge mixed with achievement mixed with burnout. Power through it Macy always remembering that what you are doing now is more of an investment in your future – your freedom – than anything else. Hoozah!

    1. I don’t know why it always asks for approval on your comments Drew, my blog never seems to do that for anyone else… as always I appreciate the encouragement, it’s nice to know I’m not the only one driving myself batty! You are SO right, it’s all those things!

  2. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You have been very busy traveling and recovering from your fall. As long as you don’t have any deadlines on completing your tiny house, relax and enjoy the process. Just remember the finish work is much more time consuming than what you have done so far. Murphy’s law will be coming into play as well. If you are burned out, take some time off from everything and recover. Then just focus on one or two things to do. I am constantly juggling many things and sometimes feel it to be burdensome. Simplify your life a little, just like you are simplifying your future living with the tiny house. Have a great day!

    1. Really great advice, I definitely need to chill out moree. I’ve had a lot going on, I can’t wait to check some of it off the list! I have been sick lately too, I can’t imagine that is helping a whole ton! Time to buck up and keep going! 🙂 Thank you for the support!

  3. it is at times a total burn out and at other times you get to where you almost hate the blasted thing…….and yet your passion and dream come back into focus and you dust yourself off and hit it again…….knowing that the blood, sweat, and tears was all worth the effort…….and yes some days you just want to torch the damn thing!!!!!!,

    1. Good plan! It was well needed… and probably could use some more but I have to keep pushing through to get to the end! 🙂 Thank you so much for the comment and the support!

  4. I am feeling the exact same thing right now! I keep putting the ‘fun stuff’ off. But one thing i am glad for is that it has given me some new inspiration for the interior design. I am living in my house now and as i look around at the uncompleted interior walls and unfinished kitchen. I keep getting great ideas that i would have never have thought of if i hadn’t literally been sitting there, doing nothing but staring at the blank wall! So dont be hard on yourself and take some time for reflecting on everything you have accomplished and you might get inspired for new ideas! Good luck!

  5. My husband and I totally had burn-out during our remodel. We didn’t really get momentum back, or a great excited feeling, but you have to power through it. Confucius was right!

  6. you can do it! I hear you though… we had a little burnout too. the framing and roofing and siding goes so fast, then you get inside and it DRAGS. plaster and sanding and more plaster and sanding and they painting and clear coating and clear coating….. ugh.

we gave ourselves a deadline by giving 30 days notice on our house that we were renting. Wow did that put the pressure on! it was good incentive though in retrospect.

I like what Ben said above too – if you have time to sit and dwell on solutions you’ll find better ones than if you just run with what you had initially planned before you could be in the space.

    good luck! you’re awesome Macy!

    1. Awww shucks Carrie!! HI!! You two are all over the news now-a-days, so glad to know such inspiring people! Thanks so much for stopping by and encouraging!

  7. Would love to see you complete your house, but honestly the process and getting to know you is what keeps me coming back. Although we probably will never meet and I will never build a tiny house, your journey is totally fascinating, of the moment and oddly, really American. Although you are not alone, you are 1 in a million and an enjoyable, unique read. Keep up the good work however the wind blows. Sincerely, Brian

    1. Awww Brian, thank you! This is the most inspiring thing to read! I am really glad you are enjoying my project! Thank you so much for taking the time to write that :).

  8. Now you find out the type of person you are…
Do you throw away all the effort you put into this tiny house so far or do you keep trying to make your dreams a reality?

    1. Ah, but the type of person I am never walks away :)… I just needed a break, back at it tomorrow! 🙂 Thank you for the comment and the encouragement!

  9. Hi Macy,
I have been feeling the same myself, to tell you the truth. Well, similar – lazy listless and a little brain foggy. It has been since I had dental surgery and I note this because a friend/naturopath said that I might just have a bunch of stuff in my liver and adrenal glads from having been medicated. She suggested I take milk thistle and some licorice root.
I started this just a couple of days ago and feel slightly less sloth like.
I am no doctor – and have no real understanding about medical things but I wonder if perhaps you are also experiencing some backlash after your injury and some type of homeopathic thing would pick you up a bit?

    Good luck and feel better.
    xo L

    1. Oh! Laur, I bet you’re totally right! That’s great to know, I will run down to the co-op and see what I can find. I sort of have the feeling that it could be related. I also just got a ton of drywall up so I am feeling pretty jazzed too! It’s a combo of needing to make substantial steps and still being a bit on the slow side from my injuries. I will let you know how it goes, I bet it will help for sure though, thanks for the comment!
