Update 7.29.12
July 29, 2012 § 8 Comments
Quick updated, not TONS of progress like I’d like to show but I did finish getting the roofing membrane up. I got a new toy and I have a couple questions. Here are some pictures:
- So we got the rest of the roof membrane up!! Finally! Note to self, do not pick the hottest month and particularly hottest weeks of a year to roof a house… the hard part is done, now to seal the seams and trim it up!
- Made a trip to the store to pick up all my trim boards and gutter/planters. I decided to go with 5′ sections that will grow ivy. We bought some gutter and started hanging it! I think it will work out just right!
- took a little tooling but we got the gutter cut and the end pieces one
- The edges are sealed but I am still thinking I should put some holes in the bottom so that excess water can drain out… What do you think?
- Here is a planter installed on the trailer. Soon I ought to be able to plant the ivy in there and get it going to start growing up the side of the house and over the roof.
- I picked up a planer today that I’m pretty stoked about! I found this on Craigslist and was able to pick it up for $200. I think it’s a pretty great deal! I will use this to plane down all the siding boards and the deck boards. It’s in great shape, has new blades and works like a champ!
- Here is the first piece of siding. Prior to planing it looked just like the ones below it. I think these will all clean up great and stain up super nice! Excited to see how it goes!
- I also managed to finish ripping the deck boards for the patio. I am using the same boards that were originally on the deck of the trailer. They are super dirty but hopefully clean up well.
- Goes in dirty and comes out clean!
- It takes a few runs, probably about 5 but the greasy grimy coating comes off well!
- Some of the pieces have really cool grain to them and are pretty bright colors
- Here is the before and after shot. I almost like the black color but i would track grease in my house indefinitely… that was a no no so I think I will stain these up the same color as the walls and be pretty happy with my little patio!
- This is all I got done before it started getting dark and I started requiring a shower :)
- This started happening on about the 9 and 10th board, you can see pieces of the grain start to curl up. What causes this? I am inclined to believe its a poor quality of wood but is it maybe a dull blade? Am I trying to cut off too much at a time (I am only doing about 1/32″ per pass)? Any incite would be awesome! Thanks
- you can see there are still areas where the grease is penetrating, I think it’s kind of a cool effect so I decided to leave it there… for now.
- Guinny came to spend the day working with us too, James is not pictured but should be… this is his pup :)
- I even managed to fit in some swinging this week! It’s been a stressful couple weeks, I like to swing when that happens, you can’t help but smile while swinging :)
- And the sun sets yet again on my tiny house.
- I just liked it!
Update 7.19.12
July 19, 2012 § 14 Comments
Another quick updated. I am plugging away very slowly for a bit longer! I have been inundated with ‘things’. I have officially cleared my schedule after the 12th of August in order to get back to full swing on the house building. I re-evaluated my schedule (which i should probably update soon) and hope to be reasonably complete by the middle of October. I am kind of bummed to cancel some camping trips and fundraiser stuff but it’s for the best! I need to find my second wind and push through this lull! The good news is it’s going to start looking cool soon, we are moving into the finishes
. Thanks for all the support everyone! Here are some pictures:
- James and I got a couple more pieces of roof on this weekend. It’s a slow process but going about as well as I could expect it to!
- Having James help probably means there will be more pictures of me to prove I am actually doing the work, I’m not to keen on the pictures but he’s pretty crafty!
- I much prefer to be a silhouette
- There have been a couple hang out sessions around/on my patio, it seems to be about the perfect size! I am ripping and planing the original floor boards from the trailer as my decking, I think it will look great!
- And now the gross part, I stepped on THIS nail. It has to be the grossest nastiest nail i could have stepped on and so I did… I got these pallets from a farm because rodents were making nests in them, not only is this nail rusty but its probably coated in rodent poo… and now it’s in my foot!
- Surprisingly the nail didn’t hurt near as bad as the tetanus shot that seemed like a good idea at the time… my arm is STILL dead from that, hopefully I won’t get lock-jaw though ;-)
- And we will end on a picture from the baseball game!
Update 7.9.12

Just a quick update, more progress to come soon!
- I have been busy taking apart pallets. Nathans pallet ripper works like a dream!
- Here is the other pallet. This is just the first step of the pellets. I am going to buy a planer and plane the top layer of these down and get them all the same thickness. Then I will need to cut them to nominal dimensions so I can have continuous rows around the house. Then I need to stain them and cut as i go putting them up.
- Of course I couldn’t just stop at the 40 pallets I took apart. My guestimation was that I needed about 30 more and there just happened to be a guy who posted that he needed to get rid of about 40 pallets about an hour before I was leaving to pick them up. Perfect timing and Nate helped me grab these last Saturday. I should be good to go on siding and you can’t beat free… there are even a couple of oak pallets in this batch, and lots of other variations of wood, I am excited to see how differently these accept the stain. I still have the feeling it will look awesome!
- Another view
- I did a little bit of work on my garden this weekend and cleared out some weeds. All of my plants are doing very well and I should start having some fruit here soon! Thanks mom for taking care of things while I stay way too busy with other things…
- I got one more piece of roofing on this weekend, I picked about the worst week yet for it, its been above 100 degrees every day this week. I can only get a small amount done before its so hot I have to give in to the heat… You can also see a crack here between where the two pieces butt up against one and other, this is ok because I picked up some elastomeric paint that I will paint on that gap followed by using a sealant and screwing in 2x2s (which will become the meat of my trellis system) and flashing them.
- You can’t beat the sun sets out here.
- pretty
Update 7.7.12

A quick update! Doing more roof in the morning. The adhesive didn’t come in for the weekend so it wont get finished tomorrow but it’s probably good to break it up a little anyway with the 100 degree weather slated over the next week. We have a gallon and a half of adhesive so I’m thinking we can get 1 -1.5 more sheets up. I still need to run and grab about 30 more pallets. I need to remove the nails from the ones disassembled today and plane them all down a bit then I am ready to get going there too! I got the kitchen sink, the only big items left to purchase that I can think of right now is the washer/dryer and the finishes (drywall, tile, counter-tops/counter materials etc.). Here is what I have for now:
- I got this kitchen sink today from Craigslist. It is an undermount white sink, brand new, never installed. I bought it for about 15% of the cost. Win!
- I had just shy of 30 pallets to disassemble, I was super excited to use the tool Nate made me listed in the previous post.
- 20 minutes later I was half way done…
- 40 minutes, all done! Amazing! Thank you Nathan! This would have taken about 4 days with the cat claw/hammer like I was doing before :)
- I got my Ivy clippings for the roof today also. I stole these from the yard at my work, they are ripping out all the ivy this week i was told so I thought I had better hurry and grab some while it was there. This is my roof :)
- The only con is having girly little office hands… I got a blister.
- How long does it take for these things to go away. This is from when I hammered my finger installing the light receptacles a LONG time ago.
- My water filter is in under the bathroom sink.
- My shower head and control piece is in and ready to go!
- For the lav in the bathroom.
Construction Update – 7.5.12
July 6, 2012 § 9 Comments
There has been *some* progress. The house is plumbed with the vent and supply lines (pictures to come soon). On the 4th I was able to finally stat putting up some roofing too. It was done pretty much in the heat of the day which isn’t a great idea… but I think we got the system down! We just got one of 6 sheets down but I got a good idea of how much more glue I need to get (it’s on order now) and we can figure out the best way to lay it down. I’m not sure how many times a person gets the opportunity to lay TPO roofing in their life if they aren’t a roofer so I think it’s pretty cool! Here are some pictures of that, sorry in advance for the butt pictures, mom did it!
- This is the bathroom lav that I ordered. I got it for basically half price because they had it marked wrong in the book! Still it cost WAY too much but it is tiny and will fit perfectly!
- We laid out the TPO roof to sit in the sunshine a few minutes and relax (it was in the instructions! because it hangs over the side vertically its tricky to make stay on the roof! A few almost booboos and we made it!
- initially we needed to get the top part of the TPO stuck down but while it was folded back it kept wanting to slide off the roof. Dad laid across it while I painted the adhesive up top. Keep in mind it was in the mid 90′s out at this point and dad laid under a thick roll of dark colored rubber for probably 10-15 minutes while I got the surface ready. It got HOT under there. Thanks dad :)
- The adhesive is kinda cool stuff, it just rolls on with a paint roller. We have to put it on both the wood surface as well as the TPO surface and let it dry before pushing the two together, sort of like a really strong rubber cement! The one I got is water based and thus love VOC as well. It was simple to use and worked great, if only there was no heat….
- I was painting on the TPO over dad, maybe some consolation… nope!
- In the bucket the glue is white then when you paint it on it turns an iridescent light blue color and then when it’s clear again you know it’s ready to stick together. Kinda cool stuff, and fool proof which helps me!
- There will be 6 of these pieces across the roof. We got one and I had to order 3 more gallons of adhesive (I thought I had ordered 2 3-gallon jugs but apparently ordered 2 1-gallon ones, I could probably pay better attention :)). On top of this I will seal and screw down some 2×2 splines which will give ma an area to put some trellis material for growies and also take care of the seams every 6′ on center
- Still lots to do but the first piece is the most daunting… I like the way it’s turning out! Non conventional but unique!
- This will be another big part of my weekend. My wonderful brother welded me up a pallet ripper, I can’t wait to use it! It will save me HOURS on taking apart pallets which needs to step into high gear now!
- We came up with this based on a video I had posted previously sent to me by my buddy Antonio. Apparently it works like a charm! I can’t wait to try it!
