Update 5.20.12

Another wonderfully productive day!  I have no idea how some of you other tiny housers do things SO FAST!  Carrie and Shane built their house from start to finish inside of three months!  Nuts!  Now Drew and Crystal are four days in and already as far along as I am, after many more months!   Today we had four people out there working on the house and made awesome progress though (Thanks Dad, Mom and Nate!).  I did manage to give myself a raging sunburn (seems like I would learn that but every year I still get a bad one!), I suppose that’s another hazard of working outside…

In short, I have windows and most of a roof and got to watch the solar eclipse through welding masks, pretty cool! 🙂

Without further ado, here is a quick update:

  1. I love the use of the cantilever porch…..I have always been a fan of the cantilever……Frank Lloyd Wright used it well in the Robie House in Chicago and also in “Falling Water” In Pa……I am a total fan of his work. I love the idea that the new generation does follow some of the proven things of the past…..so we can nickname your tiny house…. “Taliesin West II”.

It is looking “FABULOUS”……sorry couldn’t help myself!!!!!

      1. Fare enough…lol

Fascinated to hear why you not a fan of FLW…..that will be something we can discuss over coffee one of these days!

          1. OH trust me…..you will get either the first crack at the link or actual footage…….and that is a promise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      2. I admire his work……but the things I read about him he was pretty much of an A** of a person and most likely just nuts! His personal life went shipwreck early on……..I mean all the great ones were somewhat deranged!! Can’t wait to chew on this over coffee..so we will save this conversation for now. Well what ever you nickname it ….your tiny house still rocks out!!!!

        1. I can certainly respect his design skills, as a person though, he wasn’t that good. I prefer well rounded and positive people. As I understand he had decent reasons to be such an ass but I feel you either overcome it or remain a victim of it… he chose the lesser of the options in my opinion.

  2. Macy! it’s looking so awesome. So good to see it outside. but the sunburn… that happens to me all the time. It’s like I forget I’m white. If I had to build mine without Shane it would have taken SO long!

and our schedule was way too insane. If I was in charge of the world I would have taken a leisurely 4-6 months on it. enjoyed long weekends camping… balance. so hard to create. but now that it’s done and our expenses are drastically lowered, I am enjoying the thought of working less and enjoying life more.

    1. Thanks Carrie! It seems I am putting all my free time in too, which I really don’t mind, I love seeing progress. I will definitely be looking forward to getting my social life back though! And camping!

  3. It is beeeeeeeeee-uatiful. I love the design. I truly do and the house is taking shape so nicely. Thank you for the lovely mention. We have a team to: Me, Crystal, and my Daddy. Tilly Madison just tells us what to do! HAHAHAHA

If it helps I shot myself in the finger with a nailgun on Friday and got severely sunburned on Saturday. So, I guess it comes with the territory, huh? HAHAHAHAH

I agree with Carrie. What was I thinking trying to dry this thing in inside of a week? We have until Thursday. We may actually make it. One side of siding left to do and cover the ridge cap with sheathing and we are dry. But man am I feeling it all over my body!

    1. I bet you’re a hurt’n man, I have found muscles I didn’t know I had :). At least I havent shot myself with the staple gun… yet… 🙂

  4. Hi Macy!

I check in on your blog at least a few times a week and it’s very fun to see all of your progress! My husband Jeff and I are also building tiny and minimizing our lives, and it’s great to read and see how other people are doing so as well. Also, your list of other tiny houser’s blogs is one of the most comprehensive and useful ones out there, and we’ve found it a really useful one-stop place to check in on other tiny houser’s progress. So thanks! 🙂 Feel free to check out what we’re up to in our build: http://www.ourlife2thefullest.blogspot.com

    Happy Building! 🙂

    1. Thanks Margo! That’s really great to hear! I started the list because I couldn’t find anything like it very easily. In the short time since then the tiny house map started up which has also been a phenomenal resource (tinyhousemap.com)! I am really glad you are finding my site useful, that helps make the whole thing ‘worth it’! If it’s alright with you I’d love to add you to my list of tiny housers? I will also be digging through your site! I LOVE finding new people with the same passions! Good luck building, and thanks for the comment! 🙂

      1. Sorry to get back to you so late, but we’re happy to be on the tiny housers list. Our next big item to tackle is electrical and plumbing, which it sounds like you’re almost done with. I’ll be glad when that part is over with! 🙂 Looking forward to seeing the rest of your progress!
